THE BEST OF BOTH WORLDS: COFFEE & CHOCOLATE
When Café Britt decided to add chocolate to our gourmet offerings, we knew the first product would be key. What could represent both our company and Costa Rica, the country where we were founded, while also being a classic, delicious flavor combination? If you have enjoyed our chocolate-covered coffee beans, we think you’ll agree that we came upon the perfect solution!
Now available in three versions (dark, milk, and white chocolate), our first sweet is also our signature chocolate. It inspired its culinary “cousins,” the chocolate-covered fruit bits that our customers love. It’s also a reference point for every new chocolate we develop.
CHOCOLATE-COVERED PEABERRY
Smaller and rounder than regular beans, peaberries are uniquely suited for confectionery. For our chocolates, we use only these unusual beans.
CHOCOLATE AND COSTA RICA
While Costa Rica’s connection with coffee is known worldwide, not everyone is familiar with the country’s history with chocolate. Cacao is native to Mesoamerica, of which Costa Rica forms a part, and it has been cultivated in the region for thousands of years.
Although outpaced by coffee, bananas, and pineapple, cacao is still produced in Costa Rica. In the 1970s, the country’s cacao industry was devastated by a monilia blight, causing production to fall dramatically. With research and development efforts, however, the industry is coming back—and with higher quality. In fact, Costa Rica is one of the only countries in the world to export 100% fine flavor cocoa, as defined by the International Cocoa Organization.
We’re proud that our chocolate-covered coffee beans, one of our signature products, represent two products with such historical significance to Costa Rica.
